How TikTok influencer Mahek Bukhari and her mother Ansreen Bukhari were handed life sentences at Leicester Crown Court for their roles in a high-speed chase that ended in two tragic deaths.
What Happened: Chase Murders?
In a chilling and grotesque case that has left the nation stunned, four individuals have been handed life sentences for their roles in a high-speed car chase that led to the deaths of two men. Saqib Hussain and Mohammed Hashim Ijazuddin, both 21, were violently pushed off the A46 dual carriageway near Leicester on February 11, 2022, after their Skoda Fabia was deliberately rammed by an Audi and a Seat.
A Family Affair Turned Lethal
Last month, TikTok influencer Mahek Bukhari, 24, and her mother Ansreen Bukhari, 46, were found guilty of two counts of murder after a 28-hour jury deliberation. Disturbingly, Mahek blew a kiss to her father as she was taken into custody, showing no remorse. Mahek has been ordered to serve a minimum of 31 years and eight months for the killings. Her mother Ansreen was given a minimum of 26 years and nine months.
Co-Defendants Also Face Severe Penalties
Joining them behind bars are Rekhan Karwan, 29, and Raees Jamal, 23. Both were also found guilty of two counts of murder and received life sentences. Raees Jamal was additionally sentenced to a minimum of 36 years for murder and an unrelated offense.
Three other defendants, Natasha Akhtar, 23, Ameer Jamal, 28, and Sanaf Gulamustafa, 23, were found not guilty of murder but were convicted on two counts of manslaughter. They received sentences ranging from 11 to nearly 15 years. Another defendant, Mohammed Patel, was completely exonerated.
The Lethal Chase: A Look into the Events
Prosecutors argued that the victims, from Banbury in Oxfordshire, were lured into a trap. Saqib Hussain was coaxed into a meeting with the Bukharis at a Tesco car park in Hamilton, Leicester, under the guise of returning £3,000 he had spent during a secret affair with Ansreen. It was revealed that Mahek took part in the deadly ambush after Hussain threatened to expose explicit material regarding this affair.
Upon arriving at the Tesco car park, Hussain and Ijazuddin found themselves followed by the Bukharis and their accomplices in an Audi TT and a Seat Leon. Forensic collision analysis showed speeds reached up to 100mph. The Skoda Fabia, which eventually caught fire after hitting a tree, was estimated to have been traveling at over 80mph when it crashed.
A Last-Ditch 999 Call for Help
In a spine-chilling 999 call made by Hussain just moments before his death, he told authorities that their car was being "rammed off the road" by masked assailants in two pursuing vehicles. Detective Inspector Mark Parish of Leicestershire Police described it as a "callous and cold-blooded attack."
As the nation continues to reel from this grim story, many questions linger about motive, morality, and the chilling efficiency with which these crimes were committed. The severe sentences, however, indicate a glimmer of justice for the victims and their families.
