The elusive gorilla artist shared an image to Instagram depicting a burning American flag set alight by a candle, and a picture frame with a black silhouette figure.
New Art By Banksy
The elusive gorilla artist Banksy strikes again with a picture posted to Instagram, already proving controversial. The image, which has received mixed reviews, shows the flag of the USA, "Star-Spangled Banner", in a vertical position being set alight by a candle, and a picture frame with flowers.
On a grunge chalk like background, flowers are positioned on the left and right of the frame entailing a black figure, silhouette. The head of the figure doesn't include common facial features, but white eyes.
Banksy who's known for his cultural and political statements accompanied the art with a caption explaining it's creation. In black and white, the caption read: "At first I thought I should just shut up and listen to black people about the issue", he began.
"But why would I do that? It's not their problem. It's mine.
"People of colour are being failed by the system. The white system. Like a broken pipe flooding an apartment of the people living downstairs. This faulty system is making their life a misery, but it's not their job to fix it. They can't -no-one will let them in the apartment upstairs.
"This is a white problem. And if white people don't fix it, someone will have to come upstairs and kick the door in", Banksy concluded.
Although Banksy's art statement was well received considering the inequalities faced by people of colour (POC), there were some critics who weren't happy about "turning around and blaming white people," as one user wrote.
"How is it specific to the white race🧐 I don't understand how we are protesting to end racism yet turning around and blaming white people?" said the user todd_mcgill. Another user with the handle croy2465 said: "Stick to art banksy. You know nothing about politics. You have become another victim of art of political lies."
Tanizzle loves Banksy's material, and we agree with the user joshuaperuza, who had this to say: "If you're upset he posted this...... & you call yourself a Banksy fan...... & you're JUST NOW realizing that he's for equality....... then you haven't been paying attention to his message this whole time."
Banksy isn't a stranger to politics, and art has no boundaries, meaning it is what it is. As with many of us entitled to free speech, Banksy has done what some refrain from doing, speaking up, especially when being Caucasian white.
In other news: when will injustices cease, when will police brutality end? The death of George Floyd, when will it stop?
This circumstance reminds us of when the GOAT, Marshall "Eminem" Mathers bodied President Trump in a BET Hip Hop Awards freestyle, for his poor leadership. Similarly, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson criticised Donald Trump for not normalising equality.
