Drake turns the tables on his critics by rapping over the 'BBL Drizzy' diss track in a new collaboration with Sexxy Red, transforming a jab into a hit single.
What Does "BBL Drizzy" Mean Now?
Considering we're fans of the 37-year-old Canadian GOAT, it's far to easy for us to say that Drake (real name Aubrey Graham) isn't taking the L as some critics think. In a surprising turn of events, the King of the 6, has transformed a negative narrative courtesy of American record producer Metro Boomin, into a positive hit. The rapper, who recently faced backlash in his feud with Compton's Kendrick Lamar, 36, has rapped over the "BBL Drizzy" beat on "Pound Town" artist, Sexxy Red's new single "U My Everything."
The "BBL Drizzy" instrumental, released as "BBL DRIZZY BPM 150.mp3" by Leland Tyler Wayne (professionally known as Metro Boomin), 30, was initially intended to mock the "Texts Go Green" megastar. The beat, which samples an AI-generated track by comedian King Willonius, was part of Metro's response to the heated Drake vs Kendrick Lamar feud. This instrumental diss, released on May 5, 2024, quickly gained traction, garnering over 3.3 million streams on SoundCloud within a week. It also marked the first significant use of AI sampling in mainstream hip-hop, according to Billboard.
U My Everything, Including Drake!
Despite the negative connotations, Drake chose to embrace the beat on Sexxy Red's latest track, flipping the narrative. In "U My Everything," released as part of Sexyy Red's unexpected project "In Sexyy We Trust," and produced by Tay Keith, Drake raps about his history of funding cosmetic surgeries for women, asserting control over the narrative. "Me and the surgeon got history, I changed a lot of girls' lives for real," he raps. Adding: "They need a new body, they hittin' me, ayy. BBL Drizzy, they want a new body, they ask me for it."
The collaboration marks Drake's return to hitmaking following his decision to take a step back following the hype generated from Lamar's "Not Like Us." The track sees Drake and Sexxy Red teaming up once again, aiming to replicate the success of their previous collaboration "Rich Baby Daddy," which peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Fans have praised Drake for his clever reversal of the "BBL Drizzy" diss, with many noting his ability to turn an insult into a catchy hit. The decision to lean into the nickname and the beat, rather than shy away from it, has been seen as a strategic move, showcasing Drake's resilience and creativity - we promise you, that's not us gassing Drake up for the sake because we adore him! A user on X, formerly Twitter, shared a post showing a video of Ye (formerly Kanye West) smiling before abruptly forcing a serious face with the caption: "Metro Boomin seeing BBL Drizzy trending only to realize Drake flipped the script and rapped over the beat on a song with Sexyy Red".
On the contrary, a Drake critic shared a post with mixed messages suggesting Drake took an L from beefing with Kendrick Lamar, but satisfied the "BBL Drizzy" beat, saying: "Drake rapping on BBL drizzy is fire. Also, Drake really lost to Kendrick." What's your thoughts?
Drake And Summer Vibes: What's Coming?
This latest release comes after Drake announced his plans to focus on "summer vibes" and go on vacation following the intense rap battle with Lamar. While he may pick up the battle again in the future, for now, Drake seems content to churn out hits with artists like Sexxy Red and Lil Yachty.
As the music world watches, it will be interesting to see how "U My Everything" performs on the charts and whether Drake's strategy of flipping the "BBL Drizzy" diss will pay off in the long run. For now, the Toronto rapper has managed to turn a potential loss into a win, once again proving his mettle in the ever-competitive world of hip-hop.
Salute to Drizzy, and to be less bias (because Tanizzle is desparately trying to behave by reducing its toxic-sarcasm whilst remaining neutral), salute to the Hip-Hop Avengers including Metro Boomin... LMAO, it's all love, relax!
