Melissa Barrera's Exit from 'Scream 7': a controversial stand or misinterpretation? We think it's bullshit, just so you know, as Spyglass dismisses the talented actress.
Scream More And Boycott The Movie!
Let's talk about inept fools, starting with Spyglass Media Group who recently parted ways with actress Melissa Barrera, 33, who was set to lead the cast of the upcoming "Scream 7" movie featuring the infamous Ghostface killer(s) donning a costume. The initial reports suggested that Barrera's termination was linked to her outspoken support for the Palestinian cause, particularly in the aftermath of the October 7th Hamas attacks and Israel's subsequent actions in Gaza.
Variety initially reported that Spyglass Media Group declined to comment on Barrera's departure, allowing speculation to grow, and of course it did. However, the production company has now stepped forward to clarify its position. A spokesperson stated, "Spyglass' stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form." At this point, it's fair to say that Spyglass evidently doesn't have any chill (understanding) and gave her the boot for an opinion.
Melissa Barrera Speaks for The Many!
The controversy, in which, there shouldn't be, surrounds Barrera's Instagram posts, where she reshared content accusing Israel of "genocide and ethnic cleansing" and distorting "the Holocaust to boost the Israeli arms industry." Spyglass took swift action to this crap, and severed ties with the actress and emphasising their commitment to combating (imaginary) hate speech.
Filmmaker Christopher Landon, 48, set to direct "Scream VII," expressed his frustration with the situation in a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, "Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make." Lord knows why the post was deleted but we can happily assume that the production company (Spyglass) didn't want to look like idiots however, this was too late considering the firing of a leading star for her beliefs.
Interestingly, Barrera finds herself without a publicist, and Variety has reportedly reached out to her manager for a response. The absence of a publicist may suggest the challenges Barrera is facing in navigating the aftermath of her controversial posts, and they may not want to be associated with her to prevent substantiating statements previously shared by the "In The Heights" star. Who knows, but anyone distancing themselves from Barrera should be marked as: cowards. Can you tell we're fuming?
Susan Sarandon Is A Victim Too!
The situation has echoes in Hollywood beyond Barrera. Veteran actress Susan Sarandon, 77, has reportedly been dropped by United Talent Agency (UTA) following remarks she made at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York City's Union Square on November 17th Sarandon's departure from UTA marks the end of a professional relationship that spanned almost a decade.
Sarandon's statements at the rally touched on the fear within the Jewish community and drew parallels to the experiences of Muslims in the United States. The talent agency, known for its progressive stance, decided to part ways with Sarandon after her comments stirred controversy. "There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence," Sarandon told the rally.
Hollywood agencies are grappling with the fallout from controversial remarks related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. CAA (Creative Arts Agency) co-chief Maha Dakhil had to issue an apology for an Instagram post critical of Israel, and Kitty Laing stepped down as head of comedy at United Agents in the UK due to social media posts critical of Israel.
The aftermath of the Israel-Hamas conflict has brought to light the challenges nearly everyone faces when expressing their views on sensitive geopolitical issues especially critical of Isreal. As of now, it remains to be seen how this controversy will impact Melissa Barrera's career and whether other industry figures will face similar repercussions for their statements. We hope that entities (whether companies including sponsors and advertisers, studios etc.) despise Spyglass' actions and consider the idea of "free speech."
Other than that, F Spyglass and boycott their future ambitions if you stand by Melissa Barrera. Mwah, Tanizzle 2.0.
