Tory fans are in pissed, but who will they blame them? Tragic events have reverberated throughout the music industry, Canadian rapper Tory Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson), known for seven US top 10 albums in just seven years, has been handed a 10-year prison sentence. The reason? The 2020 shooting of Grammy-winning artist Megan Thee Stallion, which took place post a glamorous pool party at reality star Kylie Jenner's lavish Hollywood mansion.
The fateful night, what did Tory Lanez do to Megan Thee Stallion?
The incident dates back to the wee hours of 12 July 2020 when Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, revealed an altercation with Lanez regarding their past romantic relationship. As tensions soared, the dispute became so heated that insults about each other's careers were exchanged. Megan expressed her wish to exit the vehicle they were in, and in a chilling moment, Lanez fired his gun at the ground, yelling at her to "dance".
It was this gruesome episode that left Megan in desperate need of surgery to extract bullet fragments from her foot, a trauma that she confessed has robbed her of "a single day of peace" since - view Tory Lanez's statement about intimidation on Instagram.
Controversy and Defence: Unacceptable
Industry Reaction... Any?
Amidst the controversy, several alternate theories were proposed during the trial. Lanez's defence team, for instance, hypothesized that Megan's close associate, Kelsey Harris, might have been the real culprit, potentially driven by jealousy. Harris vehemently rejected such claims.
The DNA evidence, or the lack thereof, became a cornerstone of contention. Jose Baez, representing Lanez, highlighted that Lanez's DNA wasn't detected on the firearm in question. Despite this, Lanez, while maintaining his innocence, displayed remorse in court, stating he was accountable for the wrong he committed that night.
As news of the shooting spread, it ignited a maelstrom in the hip-hop community, with luminaries taking sides. Rap mogul 50 Cent had to apologize to Megan post insinuations that she fabricated the shooting narrative, whereas Drake seemed to touch upon the incident in his lyrics. In a show of support, rapper Iggy Azalea appealed for a rehabilitative sentence for Lanez, rather than one that crushed his life prospects.
The Larger Issue
The case has undeniably cast a spotlight on the broader issue of violence against women, particularly Black women. The LA District Attorney, George Gascón, underscored how Megan Thee Stallion's stature has accentuated this grave concern. Echoing this sentiment, Tanishia Wright, from the District Attorney's office, emphasized the urgency to address the systemic violence against Black women, which, tragically, often goes unreported due to the looming fear of disbelief.
This case is a stark reminder of the perils women face and underscores the need for society to stand united against any form of violence. The hip-hop community, and the world at large, will undoubtedly be watching closely as the repercussions of this case continue to unfold.
