Legendary talk show host, and King of low-brow television, Jerry Springer, passes away at home (in Chicago) aged 79.
Jerry, Jerry, Jerry: RIP Jerry Springer
The entertainment industry has lost a controversial yet beloved figure as Jerry Springer passed away at the age of 79. The former host of "The Jerry Springer Show" died peacefully in his home in Chicago, Illinois, as confirmed by his publicists to BBC News.
Springer (real name Gerald Norman Springer), who hosted the talk show for almost three decades from 1991, was known for his ability to connect with people, which was at the heart of his success. He tried his hand in various fields, from politics to broadcasting, and was known for his intellect, heart, and humor.
Many celebrities and personalities paid their respects to the late host, including fellow talk show host Ricki Lake, who called Springer a "lovely man" and wished him to rest in peace. Broadcaster Piers Morgan also shared his thoughts, describing Springer as a "TV icon and such an intelligent, warm, funny man."
Jerry Springer: The King of Low-Brow TV
Springer's chat show, which became a symbol of low-brow television due to its on-air fights, swearing, and infidelity revelations, earned both criticism and acclaim. In 2003, a musical based on the show, called "Jerry Springer: The Opera," ran for 609 performances in London and won four Olivier awards, including best new musical. However, its UK television broadcast on BBC Two in January 2005 attracted 55,000 complaints and sparked accusations of blasphemy and protests from religious campaigners.
Springer's career started in politics, having studied political science and law at university. He served as an advisor to Robert F. Kennedy and later became the mayor of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1978. After an unsuccessful bid as governor of Ohio, he switched to a career in TV journalism, starting as a reporter and working his way up to being an anchor.
"The Jerry Springer Show" began as an ordinary talk show focusing on social issues and US politics, but Springer switched things up dramatically a few years later to focus on salacious and outrageous content to boost ratings. Despite the show's criticisms, Springer defended it, saying that it reflected the whole society, not just the wealthy and well-spoken.
Jerry Springer: "Take care of yourself and each other"
Throughout his career, Springer was known for his humor, intellect, and his ability to connect with people. He hosted various TV shows, including "America's Got Talent" and "Judge Jerry," and also made appearances in other TV shows and movies.
Jerry Springer will be remembered as a beloved yet controversial figure in the entertainment industry. His loss will be felt deeply by those who knew him, and his legacy will continue to live on through his humor, intellect, and the impact he made on the industry.
Final thoughts: "Take care of yourself and each other" - Jerry Springer, 1944 - 2023.
