The hip-hop world mourns after the '100 Shots' rapper, Young Dolph, was shot and killed in his own hood of Memphis, as he went to his favourite cookie store.
What Happened To Young Dolph?
The rapper, Adolph Robert Thornton Jr., 36, professionally known as Young Dolph, was shot and killed in his hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, on Wednesday (17th November), as he reportedly made his way to buy cookies for his mother.
The "Talking To My Scale" artist was pronounced dead at the scene after police responded to shots fired at Makeda's Home Butter Cookies, a place habitually frequented by Dolph who would often visit during trips back to his hometown.
Young Dolph Mastered His Craft And Owned It
The rapper, who was born in Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Memphis when he was two-years-old, was notable for releasing music independently - although the "She Make It Clap" rapper, Soulja Boy (Big Draco), recently attempted to contradict these claims - and turning down millions offered from big label machines.
Via his own label, Paper Route Empire (PRE), Dolph would release all of his albums including his most recent (in 2020) solo project, and seventh album, "Rich Slave", an album that became his highest-charting endeavour, debuting at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 charts.
In the Instagram post below, as eerie as it could get considering the circumstance, Dolph pays tribute to the slain rapper, Nipsey Hussle (Airmiess Joseph Asghedom), who too was gunned down on his home turf.
Senseless Gun Violence
"This shooting is another example of the senseless gun violence that we have seen far too often locally and nationwide," said Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis at a news conference. Although there hasn't been any arrests, police will try "to bring those responsible for today's shooting, and others, to justice."
"Too many families, too many mothers, too many fathers have suffered in our city and, quite frankly, I think we are all tired of it," she added. The Mayor of Memphis, Jim Strickland, also shared his condolences saying: "The tragic shooting death of rap artist Young Dolph serves as another reminder of the pain that violent crime brings with it."
Continuing: "My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."
Young Dolph's Personal Life and Controversies
Young Dolph is survived by his two children, Tre Tre and Ari, for whom he shares with his partner Mia Jaye. He often collaborated with his cousin, Key Glock (real name Markeyvius Cathey), and his distant cousin, Juice Wrld (AKA Jarad Anthony Higgins) - who unfortunately died from an overdose (on 08-12-2019).
On September 26th, 2017, Dolph was shot outside of a retail store in Hollywood, Los Angeles, resulting in injuries doctors considered "critical". Fortunately, he was later expected to survive after several hours, however, he still had to endure two weeks of recovery in hospital from his sustained injuries (three gunshot wounds).
Irrespective of arrests being made after the shooting, two men were cleared for attempted murder including the "For The Record" rapper, Yo Gotti, and his friend, Corey McClendon.
Young Dolph vs Soulja Boy Beef
In regards to Young Dolph vs Soulja Boy, it's possibly the worst timing for this sh*t to go down, especially when Soulja Boy, whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way, openly said he'll put a "100 bounty on his head" last week - since the pair were at odds over senseless matters (money, cars, and endless career comparisons).
We're not going to entertain the idea of Soulja Boy having Young Dolph killed - like the internet is currently doing - unless the authorities say so, but his recent rants on camera haven't aged well, including clips of him taunting Dolph over his past near-fatal injuries from shootings.
Another reason why internet users aren't feeling Soulja Boy right now: he released a song named "Stretch Some" upon his death.
